The disintegrating unipolar world

2017-12-04
AFTER the disintegration of the Soviet Union the United States established a uni-polar world order. The legitimacy of the new world order was strengthened by its silent acceptance by all and sundry states. This new international dispensation was intact until 9/11. What followed thereaf ter is a Greek tragedy.

Today the world is laughing at Washington`s sheer stupidity and callous belligerence for starting those unending expensive foreign military conflicts which became Vietnam-like debacles.

Sixteen years down the line a burning desire for peace and cooperation has emerged among countries, and many new regional alliances have been forged to promote trade and commerce. Once again, the world is f ast changing to multi-polarity regionalism.

China has emerged as the second biggest economy displacing Japan. Beijing has steered clear of conflict and kept the Chinese economy on a growth path that has stayed above 8.5 per cent every year.

With its ever-expanding economy, huge reserves of gold and cash, skilled population and humongous surplus labour it is forging new ways to utilise its resources. It is also creating new economic avenues for other countries for mutual benefit.

Platforms like SCO, BRICS, ASEAN, OBOR and CPEC, among others, are validating the proposition that the world is no more an American protectorate. It is time the US realises the emergence of the new world order and its imperatives in order to save its fast falling global grace.
