Need to control lawlessness

2013-04-05
THE frequent acts of sabotage in Peshawar have once again created serious unrest among the people. The killing of innocent people in the suicide bombing at the judicial complex had ... frightened the people ... [I]n another attempt a bomber targeted the Frontier Constabulary commandant at Fakhr Alam Road in the cantonment area.

On the one hand these attacks have proved the incompetence of the law enforcement agencies, while on the other they have led tomany questions about the holding of general elections in the country.

.. Police gave different versions about thearrival of the bomber at such a well-guarded place as some say that he (the bomber) came to the venue on a motorcycle while SP Khalid Mehmood Hamdani said he came on foot andtargetedtheconvoy ofthe FC commandant near a security check post. The Taliban Pakistan spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan in his message .

claiming responsibility said that the Taliban did it because the FC was busy in operations against them in different tribal regions.

Before this, internally displaced persons at Jalozai camp were targeted by exploding a bomb whereby 12 people were killed and 35 injured for no fault of theirs.

These incidents show that Peshawar is once again undersevere threat. These acts are really condemnable because innocent people are targeted without any reason. The personnel of security forces, police and other government [officials] are targeted for the actions they are taking against the militants, but what is the sin of the public? Many incidents took place where people who were unarmed and had done nothing wrong were targeted in mosques, shrines, hujras, schools and public meetings. The IDPs of Jalozai camp were alreadyfacing great problems because they have migrated from their localities ... and are living in the camp withoutproper facilities. These brutal attacks show that the terroristshave noproperagendafor acceptance of their demands and they [condone] the killing of innocent people. ..

In the prevailing situation it is the duty of the government to take effective steps to overcome lawlessness and provide security to the people and their properties. The best way to overcome lawlessness is that ... people belonging to different political parties, civil society organisations, scholars and tribal elders should join hands sincerely and step up their efforts for restoration of durable peace in the region. ...-(April 2) = Selected and translated by Ali Hazrat Bacha.
