ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) de-notified on Friday PML-N lawmaker from Shikarpur Dr Mohammad Ibrahim Jatoi and is likely to announce next week schedule for re-voting at 21 polling stations he had been declared to have won from.
Informed sources told Dawn that May 6 was likely to be set for re-polling.
Mr Jatoi was notified as the successful candidate from NA-202 (Shikarpur-I) on May 25, 2013. According to official results, he had secured 54,890 votes against rival candidate Aftab Shabaan Mirani of PPP who had bagged 53,165 votes.
Mr Mirani had won the 2008 election from the same constituency by securing 47,379 votes, while Mr Jatoi, a candidate of the National People`s Party at that time, secured 39,405 votes.
Mr Mirani had filed a petition with the Election Tribunal in Sukkur after the 2013 polls, alleging that Mr Jatoi was involved in large-scale rigging at 21 polling stations. He had asked the tribunal to order re-polling on the seat.
The tribunal ordered re-polling at 21 polling stations last month, asking the ECP to make arrangements for the exercise.
Earlier, the tribunal had ordered thumb impression verification of voters at some polling stations in the constituency which produced startling revelations. A report submitted by the National Database and Registration Authority to the tribunal disclosed massive electoral fraud where Hadi Baksh, son of Sakhi Jatoi, a resident of Khairpur, was found to have cast 310 votes at a women`s polling station.
Sources told Dawn that Mr Jatoi had been de-notified with effect from March 5, when the judgement by the Election Tribunal had been pronounced, implying that he would not get his salary and perks for the month of March, or these will be recovered if already paid to him.
