ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), the highest forum for appointing and elevating superior courts judges, would convene two crucial meetings this month.

It will be promoting two Lahore High Court (LHC) judges to the Supreme Court and appointing chief justices to four high courts.

The JCP meeting, which was slated for April 8 for the elevation of two judges from the LHC to the Supreme Court, has been rescheduled for April 11.The sources, however, said that the Commission will consider nominations for the appointment of chief justices of four high courts in the following meeting likely to be held on April 18.

In its April 11 meeting, in addition to appointing the two LHC judges to the SC, the JCP will also appoint former judges of the four high courts as one-time members for the next meeting in which the regular chiefjustices of these high courts will be appointed.

The commission will considerthree senior most judges of a high court for the post of regular chief justice.

The nominees for the two vacant slots of the SC will be selected from the five senior most judges of the LHC.

As per seniority list of the LHC, incumbent Chief Justice Alia Naeelum is on the top.

She is followed by Senior Puisne Judge Justice Shujaat Ali Khan, Justice Ali Baqir Najafi, Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh and Justice Sadagat Ali Khan.-Malik Asad
