Plan for unique lab

2018-05-05
ALIGARH: Dr. M. Zakiuddin, a pupil of Lord Rutherford of Cambridge, of the Department of Physics of the Aligarh Muslim University, has submitted a scheme for the erection of a Low Temperature Laboratory at Aligarh. The Laboratory will be the first of its kind in Asia and Far East and will have complete arrangement for the attainment of low temperature many hundred degrees below the melting point of ice (.0001 K in technical language).

Prof. K. S. Krishnan, D.Sc., F.R.S., now Professor and Head of the Department of Physics at Allahabad, spoke about the prospects of the erection of such a laboratory at Aligarh and expressed the desire that when such a laboratory was erected under Dr. Zakiuddin, he (Dr. Krishnan) would come to Aligarh to do research worl(.

The details of his scheme are as follows: The Laboratory will be equipped with a liquid air plant where liquid nitrogen and liquid oxygen will be produced on large scale. By using liquid nitrogen and liquid oxygen and pumping these liquids temperatures of about 55K might be obtained; (2) Liquid hydrogen will be produced by using liquid nitrogen in a combined Cockcrof tKapitza liquid. This will give liquid hydrogen for experimental work (temperature about 20K) and by pumping out about 15K will be obtained.
