Dir teachers resent losing LG candidates` allegations

TIMERGARA: Teachers` organisations in Lower Dir on Thursday demanded of the government, Election Commission of Pakistan and political leadership to take notice of the accusations against the election staff, mostly government school teachers, of poll rigging by the losing candidates in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa otherwise the teachers would boycott any election duty in future.

In their separate statements, leaders of the teachers` organisations said that the election staff worked for almost 20 hours on May 30 without break for prayers, meals etc.

Ittehad-i-Asateza Lower Dir president Khalique Rehman said that teachers honestly performed their duties in the local government elections in the province and ensured successful holding of the polls.

`Losing candidates of all the political parties have been blaming election staff, especially teachers, in all parts of the province of poll rigging,` he said, adding the attitude of those candidates had spread anger among the teachers.Tanzeem-i-Asateza Lower Dir demanded of the E CP to raise the election remuneration of polling staff.

Its meeting was held here with its president Shafigur Rehman in the chair.

The participants also said the election commission deprived thousands of teachers of their right to vote.

They said that on one the hand human rights` organisations had been raising the issue of women disenfranchisement, on the other they had adopted silence over deprivation of right to vote by election staff.

They also condemned the widespread criticism of losing candidates against the teachers. The Wahdat-i-Asateza and Malgari Ustazan also threatened to boycott elections in future if campaign against them was not stopped.

HANGED: A death row convict identified as Qasim Jan, resident of Khanpur Adenzai, was hanged in the district jail Timergara on Thursday.

Sources said that Qasim Jan had killed his brother Bakht Baidar 13 years ago, over a petty issue. The court had convicted him 11 years ago.
