Warsak Lift Canal fails to serve its purpose

GHALANAI: Warsak Lif t Canal was constructed in 1960s, but unfortunately the area people, particularly the farmers, have been deprived of its waters, complained a tribal elder on Sunday.
Talking to journalists at Lower Mohmand Press Club here, Malik Sahib Shah of Agrab Daag village of Ekkaghund said at least 50 illegal causeways had been made from the canal on various spots due to which water did not reach Hafiz Khel and Agrab Daag areas, causing problems for the growers.
He complained that staff of the canal was not performing its duties due to which water theft was rampant.
He said due to lack of water at least 3,000 acres of land had turned barren in the Agrab Daag and adjoining areas of Ekkaghund tehsil.
Another local resident, Shah Hussain, said Warsak Lif t Canal was built in 1962, but the f armers in Hafiz Kor were deprived of its water.
He pointed out that the canal was meant to irrigate 32,000 acres of land, it provided water to only 2,000 acres of land in Michnai area.
Shah Hussain said the canal was also in dire need of repairs due to which water was being wasted in large quantity.
He said that the locals had time and again requested the political administration to resolve the issue, but to no avail.
MOBILE SERVICE SUSPENSION: Residents of Ghalanai and Main Mandi areas have complained that while mobile services suspended on March 15 were yet to be restored, the PTCL services were also limited to certain areas.
Mohammad Farooq Khan of Main Mandi told reporters that af ter the suspension of mobile networks he had apphedfor the PTCLlandline no.
After installation, the service, which also included DSL connection, remained functional for some days, he complained.
He said due to non-availability of phone service they were unable to connect to their relatives abroad.
Gul Mohammad Mohmand, president of Mohmand Press Club, complained that a dozen of PTCL numbers, including that of the press club, were not functional due to which journalists were also facing problems. He demanded of the PTCL general manager to look into the matter.
