`New procedures have helped cut down heart rhythm disorders`

RAWA LPINDI: Electrophysiology is a complex novel subspecialty of cardiology that is rapidly evolving, with some procedures having more than 97pc success rate that have eradicated arrhythmia significantly.

This was stated by head of Cardiac Electrophysiology Department, Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC), Brig Prof Azmat Hayat at the inaugural session of the threeday long 18th International Electrophysiology Conference titled `Rhythm for Life 2022` on Saturday.

Surgeon General Lt Gen Nigar Johar was the chief guest at the event.

Apart from cardiac electrophysiologistsfrom civil military departments, renowned subject specialists from various parts of the world,including the UK, Turkey,Azerbaijan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the US are attending the conference.

Brig Azmat, who is the convener of the conference, spoke about cardiac electrophysiology, the complexities of heart rhythm disorders and the treatment options which were available and improving day by day.

In a first, ef forts have been made to show the proceedings of the conference online so that maximum specialists can benefit from it and learn best practices.

Over 2,000 patients have recovered after the successful treatment at the AFIC because of eradication of arrhythmias.

The inaugural ceremony was also addressed by Prof Jaswinder Singh Gill f rom the Guy`s and St Thomas Hospital London, UK, who thanked organisers for inviting him, adding that he had been attending the event for the last 18 years.

He also spoke about the importance of electrophysiology and understanding of arrhythmias.

Prof Mahmood Adil from Public Health Scotland also addressed the conference, and spoke about the role of public and digital health in the field of medicine.

Head of Pakistan Cardiac Electrophysiology Society Prof Azam Shafgat also shared his thoughts in the session.

Surgeon General Lt Gen Nigar Johar emphasised the importance of electrophysiology, the growing needs and demands of this specialty and the enthusiastic participation and contribution of electrophysiology in the country as whole and military in specific.
