Two more fire victims undergo skin graft

MULTAN: Nishtar Medical University Vice Chancellor Dr Mustafa Kamal said two victims of the Ahmedpur Shargia tanker blaze had skin graft with the allografts donated by the US.

Talking to the media here on Tuesday, he said most of the 66 patients airlifted to Multan had 80 to 90pc burns. He said 17 patients were now in stable condition at the Nishtar Hospital.

`There is no trend of donatingskin in Pakistan and allografts had been brought from the US,` he said.

Dr Kamal added Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had constituted a committee for the recruitment of professors and other staff for the university and an advertisement in this regard would be released within 10 days.

Dr Naheed Chaudhry said a doctor and a nurse were deployed for each patient in Nishtar Burn Unit.

`A team of doctors of the burn unit has been trained in modern techniques in Italy and deaths occurring in the hospital on a daily basis are not because of lack of the facilities. The patients with no sur-vival chances are losing their lives,` he said.

Dr Chaudhry said modern facilities and required staff were available at the centre for the treatment of patients.

However, hospital sources said the burn unit was facing a shortage of doctors and other staff. They said there was a shortage of senior doctors in the plastic surgery and anaesthesia departments where doctors had not been posted against the sanctioned posts for years.

LAHORE: One more victim of Ahmedpur Sharqia incident succumbed to injuries at the Jinnah Hospital on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified asAshfaq Ahmed (28). Six people with severe burn injuries are still being treated at the hospital.

Jinnah Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Sohail Saglain told Dawn 23 victims of the fire were brought to the hospital and 16 of them had succumbed to their injuries. He said they had done skingraftingoffourpatients and one patient had been discharged.

BAHAWALPUR: Quaid-i-Azam Medical College Principal Dr Ijlal Haider Rizvi announced the death toll in the oil tanker tragedy soared to 210 on Tuesday after the receipt of two more bodies from Multan and Lahore.
