Amnesty concerned at `enforced disappearances`

Dawn Report 2024-07-05
LAHORE: The Amnesty International has expressed concern over the `forced disappearances` of three family members of political workers from the opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf.

In a statement posted on X, the Amnesty International says two brothers of PTl member Azhar Mashwani Professors Mazhar-ul-Hassan and Zahoor-ul-Hassan as well as PTl leader Shahbaz Gill`s brother Ghulam Shabbir went missing on June 6 and 9, respectively.

The statement said the whereabouts of all three individuals remained unknown despite their families` efforts to locate them by approaching the police and the court. `A pattern of enforced disappearance is emerging, seemingly to intimidate those living abroad, who are critical of the Pakistani government and the military,` says the statement.

The Amnesty International demanded that the Pakistan government must immediately disclose their whereabouts and ensure an effective, independent, and impartial investigation into these disappearances.

Meanwhile, PTl social media team leader Azhar Mashwani stated that his brothers had been abducted for 29 days.

Mashwani stated that last year his brother Zahoor Mashwani was abducted, kept in an underground cell for five months without a fan, and treated inhumanely.-Staff Reporter
