By Our Correspondent 2016-11-05
MANSE HR A: The Hazara University was closed for indefinite period on Friday.

The development comes on the orders of the higher education department in the wake of the killing of two university students near campus.

Also in the day, the police claimed to have arrested the suspected killer, a former university student.

Sajjad Ahmad, a spokesman for the HU, told Dawn academic activities had been suspended in line with the directions of the higher education department.

`The higher education department wrote a letter to our vice chancellorordering the closure of the campus until further orders and we`ve complied with it,` he said.

The spokesman, however, said administrative activities would continue on campus.

The university has been closed since Thursday.

The administration announced the campus closure first for Thursday and then for Friday and Saturday, too.

Mohammad Salman, who belonged to Swat, was gunned down allegedly by former university student Chand after they had heated exchanges at a snooker club near the university`s main campus in Dodial area.

The gunman was also suspected of killing own cousin thereafter to get a cross-FIR registered against his earlier victim`s group to prevent punishment.

DSP Nazeer Tanoli told reporters in Shinkiari that Chand had been arrested and that he had confessed to killing the two students, including his cousin.

He claimed Chand wanted to get Salman`s group booked for the killing ofhis cousin to prevent punishment.

The official said the situation in and around the university was calm.

He said the district administration had imposed Section 144 of PPC to stop the people from gathering in the area.

Mr. Tanoli said the police had been deployed outside the campus in large numbers.

He said many students held on suspicion of involvement in the blocking of roads and arson attacks were freed after their parents assured the police in writing that their children won`t take the law into their own hands.

WALKOUT: Members of the opposition PTI on Friday walked out of the district council over anomalies in the distribution of development funds.

They announced they would move the court against `unfair` distribution of funds.

The PML-N-led district government later approved the Rs940 million annual development fund for the current fiscal with a majority vote after the PTFs walkout.

Convener Ghulam Murtaza Tanolichaired the session, which also unanimously approved a resolution baring the National Highway Authority from reinstalling toll plaza in the area.

District nazim Sardar Said Ghulam presented the annual development plan for 2016-17 earmarlcing 20 percent of it each for education and roads.

`We have a vision for education and declared 2016 as an educational year and that is why 20 percent money of the ADP has been allocated for it,` he said.

He also said 10 percent of the ADP would go to water and health sectors each.

The nazim said he won`t yield to `unjustified` pressure of the PTI.

Opposition leader Shahid Rafique said he would go to the court for justice as the district nazim was discriminating against opposition members during the award of development funds.

PTI councillor Ambreen Swati complained women members were discriminated against during the allocation of funds.

`We will go to the court to claim equal share in the ADP,` she said.
