Banking ombudsman
2023-11-05
I AM a senior citizen aged 70 with chronic hypertension and a history of bypass surgery. I depend solely on my pension and profit against investments in National Savings schemes. A few weeks ago, I visited the relevant bank to collect my account statement for filing income tax returns.
During the process, the bank staff naturally had a close look at the statement, which did not make me suspicious at all because it was only natural. What did malce me suspicious, though not enough, was the call I received the very next day from some person who had all my banking data on his fingertips. He behaved as if he was calling from the bank branch at which I maintain my account, and told me that he wanted a few details to have the bank apps updated.
I am not quite sure how he managed it, but he did move Rs750,000 from my account. It was fraud, but, as I said, I was not suspicious enough to pre-empt it. I immediately conveyed the episode to my bank in Blocl( 7, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, (Complaint No: B23232968-05776), and subsequently reported the matter to the Cyber Crime Complaint Cell of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
No one from the bank even called me back, but after 20 days, I received an e-mail from the bank, telling me that the case has been `closed`. Closed without hearing me and without bothering to tell me what they had done before closing the case. The response from the FIA was worse. Actually, there was no response at all even when I visited aninspector at the relevant office. The gentleman was just notinterested and couldnotcare less.
Is there anyone or any department that may help me get back my hardearned money? Can the office of the banking ombudsman take up the matter? Imtiaz Ahmed Qureshi Karachi
