Power cut to refugee camps over non-payment of dues

KOHAT: The Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) on Monday suspended power supply to five Afghan refugee camps here due to non-payment of arrears.

The Pesco had been serving notices on the administrator of the Afghan refugees for payment of Rs80 million arrears for the last one year. But no arrangement had been made to clear the amount.

The affected refugee camps included Ghamkol camps number 1, 2 and 3, Ublan and Ghulam Banda.

Local Pesco officials said that electricity supply to the camps would be restored only after payment of the dues.

Due to power suspension, the refugees said that they would suffer immensely in the chilly weather, especially during nights, as the camps had no gas facility and the women had to use heaters for cooking and heating. They said that they were forced to purchase costly fuel wood.

HASHISH RECOVERED: The police on Monday recovered 10 kilogram hashish and arrested two women during checl(ing of passenger vehicles at Marai checl(post in Ustarzai area.

Officials said that the vehicle was on way from Tirah, Khyber Agency, to Kohat via Orakzai Agency.

During checking of passengers, the police recovered at least 10 kilogram hashish from the possession of two women.

They were identified as Somaira, resident of Meri Colony, Kohat, and Rabia hailing from Tank district.
