ISLAMABAD: The multisecurity chip-based vehicle registration system is finally set to be launched in Islamabad as the capital administration and the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) will sign a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday to launch the project.

The project has been under discussion for the last manyyears.

Under the system, the creditcard size registration cards will replace the vehicle registration books. The card will contain data about the vehicle and its owner.

The vehicle registration cards will be handier to use and the document would be more secure than the current registration book.

An official statement said: `The initiative is unprecedented due to its latest concept.

`All the vehicle registration books will be replaced by the chip-based registration cards which will not only enhance its portability but will also contain all the particulars about the vehicle and its owner.

An official of the ministry ofinterior requesting not to be identified said the new system would address the issue of fake vehicle registration.

`Currently, a large number of stolen vehicles are being used through fake registration books.

Moreover, it is easy for anyone to get a coloured copy of the registration book and use more than one vehicles under the same registration number,` he said.

Because of the new cards, it will become impossible to get more than one cards for one vehicle at a time. Even if a card is misplaced, the old card will be blocked before the issuance of its duplicate.

He said the excise and taxation office remained the centre of corruption in the past.

Agents demanded money forgetting the documents signed.

But after the introduction of the chip-based cards, it will also become possible to register a vehicle without any delay.

There will be specific time for the issuance of the card and no one will be able to delay the delivery or the issuance of the card.

The website of the capital administration will also provide all the information about it, he said.

In reply to a question, the official said information about the owner of the vehicle would be collected or verified through Nadra.

`The police will also be able to trace the owner if a vehicle is used in any anti-sate activity, he said.
