Police and security

2022-01-06
THIS is with reference to the recent high-level meeting called by the prime minister to finalise and subsequently announce the first-ever National Security Policy. The meeting, as mentioned by the information minister, was attended by many a big shot, but it seems that the key institution has been ignored or forgotten.

The absence of all inspectors-general of police (IGPs) indicates a myopic policy framework. How could a national security policy be unveiled without the presence of IGPs of all the provinces? It should be a stark reminder to the government that without actively engaging the police, no such policy could bear fruition as has been the case with National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and other such bodies. Everywhere in the world, national security is managed by the police and it is the office of the police chief which is the custodian of such policy matters.

Ignoring the police means the policy is not problem-oriented and would remain dormant in the long run.
