THE situation prevailing in the premises of the District and Sessions Court, South, in Karachi is alarming as people are being physically attacked and forced to pay money for one reason or the other.
Some people are actually using the police for the purpose, filing fake reports at the nearby police station just to blackmail innocent people.
The situation is particularly bad at the court that handles criminal cases. The court does not even have a working CCTV camera. There is a single camera in the gallery, but it is pointed the wrong way, and cannot record if someone gets attacked there in the courtroom. This lack of oversight encourages the criminals and makes the public lose faith in the fairness and safety of courts.
Considering how common violent incidents have become, it makes one wonder why the cases are not moved to the Judicial Complex in Karachi, whichis a secure and secluded place. Doing so, along with taking care of the CCTV camera, will not only shut down the present extortion pattern, but will also be key to restoring the public`s trust in the system.
