Destabilising coastline

2015-05-06
I WOULD like to draw the authorities` attention towards the destabilisation of Karachi`s coastline which is under serious stress. The fragile structure of the coastal area on which the builders and developers have run amok by building structure after structure without taking into consideration the subsidence effect that is going on at the coastal area. The incessant construction activity that has no regard for the mass misbalance that has been going on in the former deltaic area on which the coastline of Karachi is located.

The construction spree in Karachi is against all notions of sustainability.

The sustainability of a project is usually determined by an in-depth Environmental Impact Assessment study conducted at the planning stage, which nevertheless is conspicuous by its absence.

It appears that the developers are directly responsible for the degradation of the coastline.

This is not all, the entire coastline from KPT to Korangi Creek is slowly sinking and any more skyscrapers will be only adding too much mass on the coastline. The result would be that Karachi will start to sink at a more rapid rate than at present.
