WHILE driving through various areas of Karachi we see quite a number of high-rise residential and commercial buildings some of them completed and occupied and some very near to completion.
While, these high-rise buildings are to a large extent solving the accommodation problem in the densely populated city of Karachi, I wonder whether the builders are providing facilities for meeting emergency situations lil The earthquake in Islamabad a few years back and the recent earthquake in Nepal are an eye-opener and it is absolutely essential to ensure that these buildings are constructed incorporating earthquake-proof measures.
Moreover, the buildings must have emergency exits for fire and earthquake. Itis also advisable to train the occupants at regular intervals about how they should tackle an emergency situation.
I am sure the authorities concerned will take the requisite measures in this respect.
