ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Monday adopted a unanimous resolution warning India against any misadventure, declaring that any such move will evoke `a firm, swift and decisive response`.
The lower house of parliament made it clear that the people of Pakistan were committed to peace, but would never allow anyone to transgress the country`s sovereignty, security and interest.
The resolution, moved by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, stated Pakistan condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
It emphasised that the killing of innocent civilians was contrary to the values upheld by Pakistan.
The NA rejected all frivolous and baseless attempts to link Pakistan with the April 22 attack in India-held Kashmir, condemning the orchestrated and mala fide campaign by the BJP government to malign the country while following a `familiar pattern of exploiting the issue of terrorism for a narrow political goal`.
While condemning unlawful and unilateral declaration by India to hold the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance in blatant violation of the treaty, which clearly amounts to an act of war, the House warned that Pakistan was fully capable of defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity against any aggression, including water terrorism or military provocation, as clearly demonstrated by its robust and valiant response to India`s reckless action in February 2019.
The resolution demanded India be held accountable for its involvement in terrorism and targeted assassinations on the soil of other countries, including Pakistan.
It reaffirmed Pakistan`s unwavering, moral, political and diplomatic support to the commitment of the Kashmiri people`s just struggle for realisation of their inalienable right to self-determination.
The routine agenda of the NA was suspended for four days as the legislature sought to discuss regional tensions caused by the unlawful and unilateral actions by the Modi government after the shooting in Pahalgam area of India-held Kashmir.
Initiating the discussion, Leader of Opposition Omar Ayub condemned the Pahalgam attack and said Pakistan had nothing to do with the incident.
However, he said India itself was involved in carrying out terrorist activities and targeted killings inside Pakistan and other countries.
He criticised Prime Minister ShehbazSharif for taking a submissive stance in response to the baseless allegations.
Recalling a similar situation, the opposition leader quoted the then prime minister Imran Khan as saying, `We`ll think later, strike first`. `Modi needs a strong response to bring him to senses,` Omar Ayub said. While rejecting baseless allegations against Pakistan, he pointed out that Pahalgam is around 450km from the Line of Control.
JUI-F walkout A key moment in Monday`s proceedings was a walkout by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who protested against the non-serious environment in the House and the absence of the prime minister and most of his cabinet members.
Before leaving the House, the JUI-F chief said the session was convened to discuss a critical situation, but regretted that no responsible functionary from the ruling coalition was present in the House.
He said that nobody appeared to be serious even at this critical time and the government was completely insensitive to the situation.
The Maulana said the JUI-F lawmakers, who had come to the assembly in high spirits, were disappointed to note that none of the government representatives were in the house to listen to them.
Referring to the briefing by DG ISPR, he said the assembly should have been taken into confidence on where Pakistan stands amid regional tensions.
Unity essential Earlier, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar called for unity amid rising tensions and proposed suspending regular parliamentary business to deliver a unified national message.
`Right now, national unity is essential.
We must stand together and speak with one voice for the country,` he told the House.
PPP lawmaker Abdul Qadir Patel criticised the opposition leader`s speech, saying all political differences should be set aside under the given circumstances. He warned India against initiating any war, saying if it was started by the enemy `we will end it on our terms`.
PML-N legislator Qaiser Ahmad Sheikh said Pakistan`s desire for peace must not be misconstrued as its weakness.
He also called for increasing country`s defence budget. SIC lawmaker Sahibzada Hamid Raza Kazmi said India must be asked as to why it did not condemn the Jaffar Express attack. He also called for release of PTI founder Imran Khan.
