WASHINGTON: The US Secretary of State and Mrs Dean Acheson on Thursday night [May 5] gave a formal dinner to Pakistan Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan and his wife. Forty-seven other guests, among them some of the highest officials of the Pakistan Embassy headed by Ambassador and Mrs Ispahani and members of Mr Liaquat Ali`s party, were invited.

Secretary Acheson in a toast paid high tribute to Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan as one of the world`s great leaders, declaring: `If I could accomplish one fraction of what he has just achieved, I should feel that 1950 has been a great success.` Mr Acheson was referring to Mr Liaquat Ali`s success in arranging with Bharati Prime Minister Nehru an agreement for settling differences between their two countries.

Mr Acheson said that Americans thought of themselves as pioneers but that the `true pioneering today is being done by Liaquat` who had to work from the very beginning to hold his new nation together. He said that Mr Liaquat Ali was dealing `with the most difficult problems...,` and `this is the most adventurous and forward-looking theory in the 20th century`. News agencies
