LAHORE: The Pakistan Kissan Rabita Committee (PKRC) in collaboration with Crofter Foundation, Aman Movement and Tameer Nau Women Organization on Sunday organised a cycle rally in the city to raise awareness about climate and environment.

At least 60 cyclists took part in the rally which went around Shimla Pahari. The participants held banners and placards demanding an end to the use of fossil fuels.

The cycle rally was a partof global action by the Asian People`s Movement on Debt and Development.

Enthusiasts and ordinary people joined the climate campaigners in coordinated cycling events across 11 countries in Asia calling on governments and corporations to save the planet from climate catastrophe.

PKRC general secretary Farooq Tariq said: `Pakistan is worst hit in terms of climate change, yet the government doesn`t seem to be serious on this issue as the country continues to meet most of its energy needs through fos-sil fuels, while the rest of world has switched to cleaner mediums. Even our neighbour China has announced a halt to coal-based electricity.

He said Pakistan`s inflation and increasing electricity prices were a result of dirty energy policies as the electricity produced through imported oil and gas was proving to be costlier.

Crofter Foundation`s Saima Zia urged all civil society organisations to come forward to raise awareness about climate and environment.
