World Environment Day triggers beat plastic pollution drive

LAHORE: World Environment Day was observed by the academia and district administration on Monday under the theme of `Beat Plastic Pollution.
Seminars and walks were organized to raise awareness about the hazards of plastic pollution, which poses significant threats to nature and human health.
PU: A seminar was organized by Punjab University College of Earth and Environmental Sciences in collaboration with GIZ Pakistan.
Dr. Khalid Mahmood, the vice chancellorof Punjab Un iv e r s it y, highlighted the widespread use of plastic for convenience and its disastrous impact on the world.
He stressed the need for a s y s t e m a t i e awareness campaign, legisla-tion, and policy-making to control plastic pollution.
Javed Akhtar, Secretary of the Higher Education Department, emphasised the need to find alternative means for employment in the plastic industry, which is connected to millions of people.
He also highlighted the threats posed by the increased use ofplastic and deforestation to various species, including humans, birds, and insects.
Syed Mubashir Hasan discussed the major threats of climate change and plastic pollution.
LCWU: Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) organised a seminar to raise awareness about environmental issues and their solutions.
VC Prof Dr Bushra Mirza emphasized the significance of World Environment Day in motivating individuals and communities to take actions against climate change.
Participants discussed the importance of small steps such as conserving water, switching off lights, and adopting eco-friendly behaviors to protect the environment consistently over time.
RUDA: The Ravi Urban Development Authority (Ruda) also commemorated World Environment Day at its headquarters.Ruda has developed plans to convert the Lakho Dair garbage site into a park and implement a new scientific landfill. The authority is also working on treating polluted water from the River Ravi using advanced technologies.
Additionally, Ruda has emphasised the creation of nine forests with wetlands to restore the riverine habitat and mitigate environmental degradation.
The Punjab Central Business District Development Authority also celebrated the World Environment Day to promote environmental protection.
It has also allocated funds for the plantation of Miyawaki forests and new green spaces within the city.
Moreover, CBD Punjab has introduced Asia`s first Blue Road, contributing to cleaner air quality and a healthier ecosystem.
UVAS: The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) observed the day with an awareness walk and a seminar on the theme `Beating Plastic Pollution.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad led the walk, and experts in the seminar discussed various aspects of the environment.
Students showcased their models for combating plastic pollution.
