Kargil hero`s death anmversary passes silently

SWABI: The 18th death anniversary of `Kargil Hero` Capt Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed passed silently here on Wednesday.

No ceremony was held at the mausoleum of Sher Khan, the lone recipient of the highest military award, Nishan-iHaider in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He was born at Faujoonabad in Charbagh area of Swabi in January 1970.

He embraced martyrdom on July 5, 1999, in the war against India, and was laid to rest at the ancestral graveyard at Karnal Sher Khan Kili.

After completing his intermediate education at the Government College Swabi, Khan joined the Pakistan Air Force as an airman but later qualified the army examination and joined it as second lieutenant in 1994.

No official of the district administration or leader of any political party visited his tomb.

When contacted, Sikandar Sher Khan, his younger brother, told this correspondent that no function was held on Wednesday either at their residence or at the tomb of the Kargil hero. Perhaps, in the last 17 years it was the first time the death anniversary of Karnal Sher Khan passed silently, he added.

ARRESTED: The district police claimed on Wednesday to have arrested 165 proclaimed offenders and recovered five Kalashnikovs, 165 pistols, two hand grenades, eight rifles, 193 kilogramme charas, 865 litres wine and 2,991 gram heroin f rom them, during a crackdown in the month of June.

Officials said that the drive against the outlaws would continue.
