Unesco, GIK Institute to conduct research on water

SWABI: Vibeke Jensen, the country director of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, said here on Wednesday that Unesco and Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology could explore ways to work together in research on water.

She held a detailed meeting with Jehangir Bashar, the rector of GIK Institute. Prof Javed A. Chattha, pro-rector (academic), Ahsan Baseer Sheikh, pro-rector (admin and finance), and other officials were also present on the occasion.

The participants of the meeting discussed ways and means to work together and agreed to continue their interaction to start work while exploiting water resources in the best interest of the country.

Ms Jensen was told that GIK Institute would launch civil engineering programme soon and water would be its essential part.

Ms Jensen said that talks between Unesco and GIK Institute would continue to explore ways for working together and conduct researchon water resources to use the same for the welfare of the people.

She said that Unesco also wanted to provide financial support to girls in getting quality education. `However, we could not support individuals but the institutions/universities to support the girls across the country to acquire highereducation,` she added.

The meeting also discussed photonic engineering that would be also launched soon by GIK Institute. Ms Jensen showed interest in the field of photonic engineering that would be further discussed in future interaction between the of ficials of the two institutions.

ProfChatthasaidthattheWomenEngineering Society of GIK Institute could also prove helpful to work for girls`education. Project Topi, another society, has also worked in diverse fields for welfare of the people of the area.

Meanwhile, Ms Jensen visited Hund Museum and showed great interest to know about the various items there.

Hund Museum is built at a rich archeological site where Alexander the Great along with his army had crossed the Indus River. She was told about the Indus River, locally known as Abaseen, (father of rivers).
