Cruelty to animals

2016-08-06
THE moral greatness of a nation is best judged by the way it treats animals. In Pakistan, animals are often brought to political rallies and treated harshly. In such melees donkeys, dogs, tigers, lions and even wild boars are the unfortunate target of extreme abuse.

A wild boar was beaten to death by protesters in Islamabad. The protesters had scrawled slogans against the prime minister on the boar and tied its limbs with cables before beating it to death. Sadly, this is not the first time an animal has been tortured and killed during a protest. The practice of bringing helpless creatures to vast public gatherings continues.

My heart misses a beat and I wince whenever I hear the expletive `Gadha` and `Gadhi` used as a form of verbal exasperation.

Our prime purpose in this life is to help others, especially animals. We must strive to stamp out our habit of unconscious cruelty to animals and the manner in which we treat them. Humanity does not allow us to impose sufferings on them.
