2022-09-06
MUNICH: The Olympic Games were temporarily suspended today [Sept 5] following the killing of two members of the Israeli Olympic team by Palestinian guerrillas. Armed with machine guns, the guerrillas broke into the building where the Israeli team was staying at dawn, and killed two and held 10 others as hostages. They were threatening to kill the hostages unless their demand for the release of about 230 Arabs held prisoner in Israel was met.

The incident took place at 0400 GMT. The guerrillas first set the deadline by which their demands were to be met at 1100 GMT. Later they extended it to 1400 GMT and still later to 1600 GMT. The dead were identified as Moshe Weinberger, 33, coach of the Israeli wrestling team and Josef Romano, a weightlifter. Weinberger`s body was thrown out of the balcony of the first floor of the building housing the Israeli team. He was shot dead and his throat had also been slit.

The weightlif ter was said to have died later.

In Beirut, the Palestinian guerrilla organisation `Black September` claimed responsibility for the sensational incident which led to the temporary suspension of the Olympic Games, for the first time in the history of the Olympics.
