Fifty years ago Emergency extended

2023-09-06
ISLAMABAD: The joint session of the Parliament tonight [Sept 5] approved the promulgation of the state of emergency in the country till March 13, 1974. The debate on the continuation of emergency was rather tame and devoid of fireworks because during the morning session the Opposition walked out on the ground that its spokesman had not been allowed to make a statement in the House. Later on, the Leader of the Opposition, Khan Abdul Wali Khan, announced that the walk-out was the start of a boycott, which would last till certain demands of the UDF were accepted. News agencies [Our Special Representative adds,] the consideration of the Government resolution asking for approval of the proclamation of emergency issued by Yahya Khan in November 1971, and for its extension ... began in the morning. But before the Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Abdul Hafeez Pirzada, could move the resolution, the House presented some of the noisiest scenes with several members hurling abuses and accusations on the other side. Pandemonium prevailed for almost three quarters of an hour, and it ended only when the Opposition members staged the walk-out. The Speaker, Sahibzada Farooq Ali, ordered the 40 minutes` proceedings to be expunged.
