Sindh to challenge court order against delimitation in SC

By Our Staff Reporter 2015-10-06
KARACHl: Sindh Information Minister Nisar Khuhro said on Monday that the provincial government would approach the Supreme Court against a Sindh High Court order asking the Election Commission of Pakistan to carry out delimitation of constituencies.

The SHC had recently cancelled the delimitation of local government constituencies by the provincial government and ordered the ECP to carry out the exercise.

Speaking at a press conference at the PPP Medical Cell after the meeting of PPP leaders from Thatta and Sujawal with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Mr Khuhro termed the SHC order `an obstacle in holding the local government elections` as the election schedule had been announced and nomination papers had been filed.

`This decision would be challenged in the Supreme Court,` he said, hoping that the apex court would not allow wasting the opportunity of holding local government elections.

Mr Khuhro said that Mr Bhutto-Zardari had asked the party workers to work for the victory of the PPP in the upcoming LG elections.

He accused the federal government of using the water and power development authority to deprive the people of Thatta and other towns and villages in Sindh of electricity despite payment of bills.

He said that the residents had been told that the electricity would only be supplied if they voted for the opponents of the PPP candidates in the LG elections.

He asked the ECP to take notice of Wapda excesses in Sindh like it had rejected the prime minister`s relief package for farmers announced to affect the elections.

In reply to a question, the minister said that Sindh was not going to create any hurdle for the ECP to hold the LG polls.

However, if any obstacle was created in its way, entire Sindh province would protest against it and would not allow anyone to create hurdle in the way of the election commission, he added.

He said the civil governments were only accused of not holding the LG polls in their respective tenure, but Sindh was the first province which made a law that the LG elections would be held on a party basis.

In response to another question, Mr Khoro said that only the parties which were foreseeing their defeat in the LG elections were blaming the PPP for forcing their candidates to withdraw. `Let the opposition hurl allegations, the PPP would emerge victorious in the local government elections with the votes of people.

Regarding resignations of the lawmakers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, he said that the PPP believed that they should not have resigned, as they tendered resignations under protest and not voluntarily.
