2015-10-06
ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) has sought a progress report on holding of elections in the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).

After a two year-long tussle between the PMDC and the Ministry of NHS, President Mamnoon Hussain promulgated PakistanMedical andDental CouncilAmendment Ordinance 2015 on August 28 which led to the dissolution of the PMDC executive council. The ordinance made it mandatory for the new management committee established for an interim period to hold elections within 120 day.

The committee consisted of retired Maj. Gen. Azhar Kiyani, Prof. Abid Faroogi, Prof. Nadeem Rizvi and others was also mandated to run day to day affairs.

On Monday, the Ministry through a letter, available with Dawn, asked the PMDC management committee that holding election in 120 days was its foremost responsibility so it (management committee) may send an updated progress report on elections to ensure that the task is completed within the stipulated time.

The letter, signed by the section officer, Mohammad Azam Gakhar, is issued with the approval of the secretary, NHS.

The PMDC management committee member Prof. Abid Faroogi while talking to Dawn, however, said all the arrangements for holding the elections had been finalised.

`We are ready to hold elections in the first week of December and this will be told to the ministry of NHS too, he said. A Reporter
