Murder suspect `commits suicide in custody

SARGODHA: A man, who allegedly killed son of his employer after kidnapping him for ransom, `committed suicide` on Thursday morning in police custody by jumping into Lower Jhelum Canal near Phularwan, some 30 kilometers from here.

Rescue 1122 recovered the body after a couple of hours.

Police said suspect Lutafuddin was servant of landlord Gulzar Ahmad of Rato Kala village. A week ago, he allegedly kidnapped Gulzar`s son Waqas (13) and demanded Rs5 million for the release of the boy. Phularwan police had registered a case against three uniden-tified suspects on the complaint of Waqas` mother.

Later, the boy was found dead in fields.

Police arrested three suspects, including Lutafuddin, in the kidnap and murder case.

Police claimed that Lutafuddin was being tal(en to Sargodha antiterrorism court by a van.

Suddenly some animals appeared on the bridge of the canal and he [the handcuffed suspect] got himself released from police custody and jumped into the canal.

Relatives of the suspect termed it an extra-judicial killing and said police threw him into the canal.
