Shifting of Swabi varsity opposed

SWABI: Local leaders of various political parties have opposed the government`s plan to shift the Women University Swabi (WUS) from its present building at Gulu Dheri, located near the city centre, to far-off Kotha village.

The WUS at present works in a makeshift building at Gulu Dheri where Pakistan Tehreelei-Insafled provincial government first established the campus of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University, Peshawar, and later gave it the status of university.

A few days ago, Chief Minister Pervez Khattak laid the foundation of the university building in Kotha village and announced that they wanted to complete it before completion of the government`s tenure.

In a chat with this scribe, PML-N district general secretary Dildar Khan said on Thursday that the university was functioning well in the present building and there was no need to shift it from PK-31, Swabi-I to PK-35, Swabi-V.

He claimed that that PK-35 was the constituency from which KP Assembly Speaker Asad Qaisar was elected in 2013 and that was the reason that the university was being shifted there.

MPA Babar Saleem, who is chairman of Swabi Qaumi Mahaz, said that the people of PK-31 were being deprived of the benefits of development projects. Awami National Party`s former provincial minister Zar Shaid said that the present building of the women`s university had all the required facilities and there was no need to shift it to another location.

CHARAS SEIZED: Police foiled an attempt to smuggle charas to Punjab via Swabi on Thursday.

They stopped a car (LOW 597) in Topi region and recovered five kilogrammes of charas from its hidden cavities.

They also arrested Mian Gul, a resident of Dadouzi area of Peshawar. The police registered the case and have started investigation.
