Policeman killed in Lakki attack

By Our Correspondent 2013-11-06
LAKKI MARWAT, Nov 5: A policeman was killed when militants attacked a checkpost near Suray Pul here on the night between Monday and Tuesday.

`The post was established to stop infiltration of miscreants from the adjacent frontier regions of Lakki and Bannu into the settled parts of the district,` said an official. He said that the attack was sudden as militants besieged the post and opened firing on the policemen present there.

The official said that a policeman identified as Sher Nawaz was injured in the attack while Imran, another constable, went missing. He said that the injured policeman was shifted to a local hospital in Naurang but he could not survive.

`The attackers used light and heavy weapons and engaged the law enforcers for half an hour,` the official said. Perhaps the assailants wanted to destroy the post and kidnap the policemen, he said, adding but the law enforcers foiled the bid and repulsed the attack.

The official said that it was the first attack on law enforcers in the district after killing of Tehreek-i-Taliban chief Hakeemullah Mehsud in a drone strike in North Waziristan Agency.

He said that Imran was later found in the nearby fields where he was lying unconscious.

The killed policeman was buried with official honour at his native graveyard in Paindakhel village. Police officials and people from different walks of life attended his funeral prayers.
