Kids, education and TV

2014-11-06
THIS refers to Irfan Hussain`s `Freedom or Licence`, (Nov 1) where he mentions that the BBC airs educational quiz show at 8pm and a highly paid anchor hosts it. For them, rating and advertising revenue is not important. But education is.

Our TV channels are indifferent to the need of society in terms of youth and their education. How many channels air educational programmes for children or youth? Instead political representatives are called simply to wrangle and defend their party`s position, where nobody listens to no one, thus leaving viewers disgusted.

Often media persons like high priests, sit and discuss the responsibility of electronic media towards society but never mention dissemination of knowledge as their duty.

They might be very keen as parents for their children`s education. But once you talk from the high pedestal of the TV screen you are responsible for every child.

Modern societies expect TV to serve the educational needs of young viewers by offering educational programmes. Our youth forms 60 per cent of our population and they have every right to aproportional share of TV air time.

Realising the importance of youth, developed countries like America have enacted bills like 1990 Children`s Television Act which requires three hours airtime for children. It is sad our channels, print media and government alike have neglected the most robust segment of our society.

We need to invest in our youth. Allow them full coverage and participation in dif ferent programmes. They should participate in live debates, quiz and knowledge competitions. Telecast Youth Parliament activities. Highlight the achievements of youth. It will stimulate them and give them the feeling that, soon, this country will be in their care.

This is our national responsibility.

Remember, a nation`s treasure is its youth.

Mohammed HanifKhan Karachi (2) WE live in an era which is controlled by television and its negative influences on the minds of children should be taken into consideration.

Most of the children and youth these days spend more time in front of a television set ratherthanreadingtextbooks orstorybooks.

The kids learn more from TV rather than their parents and teachers combined. There are many parents these days who find it easier to handle their children by turning on the TV and making them watch it.

But have you ever considered what exactly are children watching? Well, every possible social or cultural evil that you canthink of present in society is being instilled in these innocent minds. For example, you will witness anything from the destruction of national culture or heritage to bloodshed, and from real-life murder to racism. In fact, you will find cartoons that should be labelled PG 15.

It would be much better if children were allowed to play outdoors with other children or even indoor games. They should be introduced to playful activities where they get a chance to interact with their peers.

Theyshould alsobeencouragedto participate in creative pursuits.

Parenting is considered one of the most hectic jobs assigned to mankind. It would be great if we start doing these tasks ourselves rather than relying on the idiot box.
