The former Prime Minister`s end came in his hotel room in Beirut at 3.20am Beirut time; 6.20am W.P.S.T.
He died of another, and fatal, attack of coronary thrombosis.
The sad news was conveyed at about 3pm yesterday to Suhrawardy`s only daughter, Begum Akhtar Sulaiman, by the Foreign Office, which received it first from the Pakistan Embassy in Beirut.
About an hour later, a cable from a Lebanese friend of Mr Suhrawardy reached Begum Sulaiman informing her of the passing away of her illustrious father.
Mr Suhrawardy, who was a little over 70 at the time of his death, had been a heart patient for quite some time.
He had his first heart attack on Jan 3, 1963. In March last he left for treatment and rest aboard. After spending some time in Beirut, he went to London and Germany, and then returned to Beirut. The Pakistan Embassy in Beirut is arranging to send Mr Suhrawardy`s body to Karachi. It is likely to be brought by a PIA plane tomorrow, but this was not finally confirmed last night.
Mr Suhrawardy`s son-inlaw, Mr S.A. Sulaiman, who thought of flying to Beirut today, changed his mind when he was informed by the Foreign Secretary, Mr Aziz Ahmed, of the arrangements already under way.
Meanwhile, Mr Mujibur Rahman and several other leaders from East Pakistan are due to reach Karachi today.
After consultation with Begum Sulaiman they will decide where to bury her father.
The news of Mr Suhrawardy`s death cast a gloom as it became known in the City.
And it spread throughout the country. Streams of people officials and non-officials kept calling at his daughter`s residence to offer condolences. Staff Correspondent•
