Youth unemployment

2015-12-06
OWING to bleak employment prospects, the youth today are living with the apprehension that they are `unemployable and `useless.` These are the findings of a study by an NGO.

According to their overview conducted among 2,000 youngsters, aged between 16 and 25 years, the political and economic outlook in the country has left more than half (51.3%) of these youngsters feeling stressed, and one in seven (15%) dread that they will never get an opportunity to join their ideal profession.

The study also states that 53% were anxious about their occupation prospects.

Almost two out of five (37%) said they `never or almost never` received expert adult supervision when applying for occupations.

What`s more, almost (64%) felt that merit was never the criteria. As a result, youngstersfeelthey have no alternative except to adopt shortcuts and resort to anti-social behavior as a means of protest.

It is for the government and society at large to ensure that all education institutions of higher learning impart skill-based learning and also have a role in providing jobs on merit to bring a positive change in society.
