NA speaker against making next polls controversial

By Our Staff Reporter 2023-12-06
LAHORE: National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Tuesday urged all the political parties to avoid making the election process controversial.

He was addressing a press conference, along with PPP Punjab Secretary General Syed Hassan Murtaza here on Tuesday.

He said the government elected in the wake of a controversial election would be unable to contribute to development of the country, adding that holding of transparent poll is the need of the hour.

He said no one should claim winning the elections from each and every constituency and make national institutions controversial through such political statements.

The speaker said Pakistan was the only country where caretaker governments conduct elections.

He said it is duty of the Election Commission to provide a level playing field to all the political parties.

Mr Murtaza said that PPP would not compromise on the 18th Amendment, adding that the country was facing a constitutional crisis.

Responding to a question, Mr Murtaza said only the party standing with the people would form the next government, dispelling the impression that someone could come into power through any `deal`.
