By A Reporter 2015-01-07
LAHORE: A court on Tuesday sought appearance of capital city police officer on a petition seeking action against some police officials allegedly involved in the killing of a man in a `fake` encounter.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Arshad Husain issued the order on the petition filed by Farooq, a resident of Santnagar, Lahore.

The petitioner, through his counsel, had contended that police staged an encounter on Jan 2, 2015, and killed his brother, Usman Akbar.

Farooq said his brother was taken into custody by police on Nov 12, 2014, from Yateem Khana Chowk in connection with two cases registered with Nawan Kot and Gulshan-i-Ravi police under murder and other criminal charges.

He said his brother was later handed over to the Crimes Investigation Agency (CIA), Iqbal Town, and produced before an antiterrorism court (ATC). The court sent the accused to jail on judicial remand in one of the cases.

He said CIA police produced Usman before the ATC on Dec 17, 2014, for physical remand in the second case. The court grantedhis custody to police with a direction to produce him again on Jan 6, 2015, he said.

However, the petitioner alleged the police killed his brother in their custody before the next hearing.

The petitioner sought action against the police officials involved in the alleged murder of his brother.

The judge summoned the CCPO on Jan 14.

REPLY SOUGHT: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday sought a reply from the Punjab government on a petition challenging closure of evening educational academies owing to security concerns.

The petitioner, through his counsel, stated besides schools and colleges the government had also starting closing down evening academies in the name of security.

He said the impugned act of the government was wasting precious time of the students who could not afford heavy fees of morning educational institutions.

The counsel argued that the government had adopted an anti-education policy.

He asked the court to restrain the government from closing the evening educational academies for security reasons.

The court will resume further hearing on Jan 20.
