Municipal workers continue protest

SUKKUR: Employees of the Sukkur Municipal Corporation (SMC), who had observed a a strike and held a sit-in outside the SMC office on Tuesday against non-payment of their outstanding salaries, continued their protest on Wednesday.
Locking their offices and working places, they protested under leadership of union office bearers including Muhammad Asif, Chaudhry Shafaat Ali, Ali Mardan Shaikh and others.
Addressing the protesters, the leaders said that as per directives of the Sindh High Court bench at Sukkur, one month ago, the government had transferred Rs250 million into the
official bank account of the SMC for payment of outstanding salaries, but the employees were still deprived of the payment.
On one hand the families of employees were facing starvation due to financial crisis while on the other the municipal commissioner of Sukkur was allegedly taking financial benefits and interest of the funds deposited in the bank.
If the salaries were not paid immediately, they said, a strong protest in front of the DC office Sukkur would be staged.
