ISLAMABAD: The son of a Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz senator approached the Supreme Court on Saturday, seeking a special oath for members of the sixman joint investigation team (JIT) to keep them from being influenced by the speeches of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif`s arch-rival, Imran Khan.
`Propriety demands that a special oath may be solemnised [for] the members of the JIT to work uninfluenced from speeches of Respondent No 1 (Imran Khan) and other material of similar nature broadcast in this behalf,` pleaded the petition moved by Advocate Qausain Faisal Mufti, on behalf of Barrister Danyal Chaudhry.
The Supreme Court had on Friday appointed the JIT, headed by FIA Additional Director General Wajid Zia, to investigate the allegations stemming from the Panama Papers leaks, regarding investments in offshore companies by the family of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
The petition asked the apex court to restrain Imran Khan from activities that could innuence the minds of JIT members, including speeches and press releases.
The petitioner expressed the fear that Mr Khan, if not prevented from making political statements, could cause the derailment of democracy.
The petition sought orders for the Pakistan Electronic MediaRegulatoryAuthority (Pemra) to not allow the broadcast of any material that jeopardised the sovereignty, integrity, solidarity of Pakistan and well-being and prosperity of people of Pakistan.
The petition alleged that by making speeches the conduct of Mr Khan amounted to destabilize the government and hampered the functioning of the federal government by weakening its writ and destabilising the confidence of the government in making decisions in respect of national and international affairs.
