RAWALPINDI: The Punjab government has ordered the establishment of separate schools for boys and girls in each union council of the district.

This information was shared with the participants of a meeting held to review development projects launched in the district under grants provided to the provincial assembly constituencies. Deputy Commissioner Talat Mehmood Gondal presided over the meeting which was attended by MPAs Raja Mohammad Ali, Shaukat Aziz Bhatti, Umer Farooq, Raja Hanif Advocate and Malik Iftikhar along with senior officials of the district administration.

The district administration has been directed to speed up the work and complete the projects worth Rs2.4 billion before the end of the current fiscal year on June 30. Some of the projects in the education and health sectors were facing delays but the construction of roads in Kahuta, Taxila and Gujar Khan has been completed, the meeting was informed.

The district administration officials briefed the members of the provincial assembly about the status of projects in their constituencies and assured them that the work would be completed by June 30.

A senior official of the district administration told Dawn that the establishment of schools in each union council had been started on the recommendations of the ruling party MPAs and local leaders.

He said the government had released the funds for providing all missing facilities in schools and the district administration had compiled a list of areas where there were no schools.

The official said the reconstruction of old school buildings was facing a delay but would be completed during the summer vacations.

`The government allocated RsG00 million for the reconstruction of 178 dangerous school buildings in the Rawalpindi district. But the work was started in March as the funds for the education and health sectors remained frozen due to the change in the local government system.

He said the accounts of the education, health departments and the district administration were de-frozen in March after the notification of the rules for district education and health authorities.

The government has directed the contractors to speed up the work so that it could meet the deadline of June 30 otherwise the funds will lapse, he added.
