KU begins data collection of staff town residents, vehicles

KARACHI: The University of Karachi has launched a drive to collect data of the residents of its staff town as well as private vehicles particularly rickshaws that enter and exit the campus on a daily basis The data collection is part of efforts to improve the overall security system at KU, where a suicide bomber had blown herself up outside Confucius Institute killingthree Chinese teachers and the local van driver on April 26.

`On the instructions of acting Vice Chancellor Dr Nasira Khatoon, KU Campus Security Adviser Dr Muhammad Zubair and his team have started collecting data regarding private vehicles particularly rickshaws, which enter or exit the campus on a regular basis,` a KU statement issued on Friday said.

It said a good number of students and employees used rickshaws and other private vehicles to enter the campus on a daily basis and the campus security office was collecting data of rickshaws owned or run by the people living in the residential area of the university.

The security team was also told to allot parking spaces to private vehicles at dif ferent locations.

The statement said that the secu-rity team was also collecting data of all the `teachers, staff and employees and their families residing in the residential block of the university` so that new gate passes could be issued to them.

Recently, the KU administration had rescheduled the timings of the opening and closing of all gates used for the movement of the vehicular traf fic.

Now, the Golden Jubilee Gate, also known as Metroville Gate, will be closed for all kind of traf fic after 8pm; M askan Gate would be opened till 10pm, while Silver Jubilee Gate will operate during the working hours (class timing of morning and evening shifts).

It said that Staff Town Gate will remain open round the clock and people will be allowed to enter and leave the university after completing required procedure.
