The smug Mr. Attlee

2023-05-07
(EDITORIAL) When Mr Clement Attlee, British Prime Minister, told his Parliament on Wednesday [May 5] that because neither side `entirely agrees with them` the U.N.

Security Council`s proposals on Kashmir must be `fair`, did he think that Pakistan and India, or we should rather say the people of Kashmir and their oppressors, were quarrelling over a loaf of bread and it did not really very much matter whether one got a bigger slice than the other because after all both got something to eat? Did it not occur to His Majesty`s first Minister that the issues at stake in that unhappy part of the world were of an entirely different nature and involved ... fundamental principles of human liberty...? ...[I]t is ... easy for British politicians to wax smugly eloquent on the virtues of `give and take`, but the victims of aggression who are faced ... with ... total annihilation by a powerful neighbouring country`s ruthless use of organised military might ... can only feelhorroranddisgustatsuchanattitude on the part of `world leaders` who pretend to be the custodians of all that is good and noble on the face of the earth.
