MANY major cities of Pakistan have to send their goods to the port cities for onward export as they are far from the sea.
The city of Manchester decided to overcome this obstacle in the late 1890s and early 1900s by developing an architectural marvel that enabled huge ocean-going vessels access to the city.
The city fathers of Manchester came up with this idea after they decided they were no longer ready to pay the huge sums of money to the city of Liverpool for the use of their docks and railway facilities.
In Pakistan today, owing poor landtransportation infrastructure, exports cannot be sent abroad speedily.
The government should develop ship canals to boost the country`s exports. This should not be as difficult a task today as it was for the city of Manchester.
