Extorting money

2023-08-07
THE repercussions of hyperinflation have gone far and wide. Already wary of increasing prices of commodities, buyers mostly turn to model bazaars in their vicinities. However, the bazaars appear to be affected by the vagaries of national economy. The relevant authorities in Lahore have been raising the rents of small stalls and shops over the last six months during which they have increased the rent three times. This has affected the overallbusiness outlook of the market as well as of the buyers.

After getting notified for the third time regarding rent spike, the poor shopkeepers had no option but to knockat the doors of justice. The vendors were compelled to lodge a complaint with the relevant court of law in this regard.

Raising the rent so frequently and substantially is unfair and unjustified. Such an act is akin to snatching the livelihood of the poor and small shopkeepers who toil the whole day to make both ends meet.

It is quite painful to see that there is no one who came to the rescue of these poor souls. The authorities concerned should look into the matter immediately.
