IGP seeks proposals for reforms in seminaries

KARACHI: Sindh Inspector General of Police A.D. Khowaja directed police officers on Wednesday to prepare comprehensive recommendations for bringing reforms in seminaries in the province.

The decision was taken in a meeting presided over by the IGP at the Central Police Office in order to control militancy.

Mr Khowaja suggested that seminaries could only be established on government land with the state`s permission, which would be given by a registrar/divisional commissioner and confirmed by a deputy commissioner.

He further suggested that it would be necessary for seminaries to provide details of all of their teachers and students and there will be a check on their syllabus.

Senior superintendents ofpolice would monitor affairs of seminaries in their respective jurisdictions, he said.

The seminaries will have to provide contact numbers and photocopies of their head`s computerised national identity card, besides information about their sources of income.

Persons who are listed on the Fourth Schedule or those who are involved in sabotaging peace would not be allowed to set up a madressah.

Assistant commissioners along with magistrates may conduct surprise visits to seminaries to see if everything is moving according to the law, proposed the IGP.

The meeting was attended by Additional IG CTD Dr Sanaullah Abbasi, Additional IG Special Branch Dr Waliullah Dal, DIG Headquarters Sindh, DIG Finance, DIG Special Branch, AIG Operations Sindh, AIG Admin CPO, AIG Establishment, AIG Legal and other officials.
