LAKKI MARWAT, Nov 6: The municipal workers union ended strike here on Wednesday after the deputy commissioner assured them of provision of funds for payment of their salaries.
The municipal committee employees were on strike for the last two days against nonpayment of salaries. They had suspended supply of water to the residents besides halting cleanliness work in urban locality as part of protest campaign to put pressure on the quarters concerned to accept their demand of ensuring payment of Rs6 million to the civic body from the district council funds.
On Wednesday, the workers gathered in Tanchi office to hold a demonstration on Lakki-Darra Tank road. After being informed the police officials engaged the workers` leaders and urged them to re-frain from holding protest demonstration on the road in view of the Muharram security plan.
Area elders, including head of Marwat Qaumi Jirga Aslam Khan, Ameer Nawaz Khan and district bar president Niamatullah Khan, convinced the workers on holding talks with the district administration.
Later, a delegation of elders and workers` leaders met deputy commissioner Zafar Ali Shah at his office who assured them that the salary issue would be resolved soon.
He directed the chief municipal officer to install streetlights in the routes of mourners` procession and ensure cleanliness.
Meanwhile, the employees union of district council held a meeting to discuss the issue of payment of Rs6 million to the municipal committeeLakki from the district council funds.
The union leaders said that the district council had already paid Rs3.8 million to the municipal committee Lakki for payment of salaries to the employees.
They said that after the recent notification about payment of Rs6 million to the Lakki MC and Rs3 million to Naurang MC from the district council funds the deputy commissioner through an official letter informed the higher quarters about the financial position of district council.
They said that if the amount was paid to the municipal committees the financial position of the district council would weaken.
They demanded of the provincial government to withdraw the notification of making any such payment.
