Karachi operation

2015-11-07
THIS refers to the news report `Indiscriminate targeted operation to continue at same pace: corps commander` (Oct 21). But the resolve does not conform to the reality on the ground.

It seems that the focus on corruption, money laundering, tax evasion, land grabbing, smuggling, etc., has shifted and is not high on the agenda. High-profile politicians and bureaucrats involved in mega corruption remain safe. Fear of the law by the corrupt is conspicuous by absence. The oft-repeated vow of carrying out ruthless accountability by military establishment seems hollow.

Accountability always starts at the top and permeates to the bottom. Here a different strategy is being followed. Even names of serious offenders are not being put on the exit control list. The military`s basic training is of quick and swift action. Here, there is endless procrastination.

Terrorism may resurface after thepresent lull if the nexus between terrorism and corruption is not broken. Relying on civilian institutions like NAB and FIA to tackle corruption is just futile as these bodies are themselves corrupt.
