Imran consults lawyers

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Sunday consulted the members of his legal team ahead of the Supreme Court hearing of the Panama Papers case scheduled for Monday.

A party spokesman told Dawn that the lawyers representing the PTI in the case against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and members of his family met the chairman at his Banigala residence and discussedthecourse ofactionin thecourtin the light of the replies submitted by the respondents.

Those who called on Mr Khan included Hamid Khan, Naeem Bokhari, Babar Awan and Waleed Iqbal.

The spokesman said the participants reviewed the replies submitted by the prime minister and others to the apex court in response to the petitions Kled by the PTI and other opposition parties accusing Mr Sharif and his family members of setting up offshore companies, as revealed by the Panama Papers, through money laundering and corruption.

The prime minister, in his 15-page reply, has denied that he is the beneficial owner of any offshore entity.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and retired Capt Mohammad Saf dar, son-in-law of Mr Sharif, have also submitted their replies, asking that the petitions be dismissed.

At the last hearing on Thursday, the court had expressed its displeasure over the failure of Mr Sharif`s children Maryam, Hassan and Hussain Nawaz to file replies. The court allowed their counsel Salman Aslam Butt more time, saying they would have to submit their statements by Monday.

It had also asked all the parties to present proposals on how to regulate its proceedings so that it could pass a binding order on Monday regarding the appointment of a one-man commission under a judge of the Supreme Court.

After attending the court`s proceedings, Imran Khan had expressed his satisfaction and pleasure over them.
