MILLIONS in Pakistan have resorted to begging as their sole source of income.
Many have formed intricate networks thathave gonebeyond the geographical boundaries. This societal degradation has pushed them to beg without regard for their country`s honour or dignity.
They can be found begging in holy places, like those in Saudi Arabia and Iraq, disguising themselves as pilgrims.
Begging has become a lucrative trade for them. They obtain visas, travel abroad, and beg under the guise of religious duty, exploiting people`s faith.
Even in Saudi Arabia and Iraq, the countries known for their strict laws, thesebeggarsgounchecked.Shockingly, many pickpockets caught at holy sites also turn out to be Pakistanis. This issue reflects poorly on the nation, and calls for immediate attention.
Our society`s negligence has led the situation where `local` beggars are finding opportunities to go `global`. Those who offer alms to these `professional` beggars are equally to blame for encouraging this racket. While these beggars havebrought embarrassment to the country, it is imperative to identify and punish thosefacilitating theirinternational journeys. Such activity cannot flourish without the connivance of government officials who are actually responsible for ensuring that such elements do not travel abroad as pilgrims.
All the relevant authorities must shoulder the responsibility of not only eradicating corruption at home, but also dismantling the network of Pakistanibeggars abroad.Suchefforts will allow law-abiding and respected citizens overseas to hold their heads high.
