PAC refuses to review audit reports over incomplete documents

KARACHI: The Public Accounts Committee of the Sindh Assembly on Thursday refused to consider the draft paras of the Tando Allahyar district government for the year 2010-11 because the working papers were not prepared according to the format provided to them for the purpose.
The PAC, which met here in the committee room no 2 of the assembly building, was presided over by its chairman Salim Raza Jalbani.
Before taking up the scheduled business, the meeting was terminated within half-an-hour as the working papers of the 4 paras of the audit report regarding Tando Allahyar district government were not complete.
After initial introduction when the PAC chief took notice of the non-compliance with the guidelines in preparation of the working papers, deputy commissioner Rashid Zardari offered his regrets to the PAC and pointed out that he had taken the charge of the ofHceof the deputy commissioner only three days ago and requested the meeting participants to ignore the lapse with the assurance that next time he would ensure that the working papers were prepared in accordance with the given guidelines.
The chairman terminating the meeting gave 15 days to the district government to complete its homework and come prepared for the PAC meeting.
According to the 4 paras of the auditor general`s report anomalies worth Rs107.576 million were detectedin the accounts.
The PAC chief asked the deputy commissioner to come up with the documents and required records for settling the paras.
The lone other member of the PAC who turned up for the meeting was Sorath Thebo of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
In response to a question after the meeting was terminated, she endorsed the views expressed by the PAC chief on the performance of the public accounts committee of Sindh in the given situation.
